Synopsis and Story
Deciding to design, build, and produce the R8 was one of the single best decisions the Audi brand has made in recent years. It gave Audi a flagship supercar to compete with the heavy hitters from Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. When it launched, Audi had almost everything right: it was beautiful to look at, well balanced and light weight from an all-aluminum body and structure, and had a ton of grip thanks to Audi’s typically great Quattro System. It was missing one thing however; brute force.
Fast forward to 2009, when Audi finally figured it out and implemented their brilliant decision to drop in the 5.2L V10 from the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. What a wonderful pairing that engine and R8 chassis turned out to be! With 525 hp @ 8,000 rpm, it helped propel the R8 into true supercar territory and it finally made a viable option to owning a Porsche.
Audi wasn’t finished though. They then did something truly insane and chose to produce a small number of V10 R8’s with a 6-speed gated manual transmission. As a manual it is an absolutely brilliant car to drive. It is quite easy to match the revs when downshifting and the shifter makes an engaging “clack-clack” sound – a sound that you always thought you would have to buy a classic Ferrari to enjoy. Truly, the R8 is a special car.
